Salkantay Trek in Peru

  1. *hoping this is the right thread! My first time starting one...*

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Peru this September (first two weeks of the month), and we're really excited to do the Salkantay trail to Macchu Picchu. I have been trying to figure out the logistics of the trip and was hoping someone can help me out.

    1. Do I have to book this before I arrive in Cusco?
2.What are the recommended tour operators for this one? Personal experience with a great company would really help :)
    3. What would be the price range for this trip if booked in Cusco? I'm seeing prices run in the $480-$550 range now (if I book online), and a lot of stuff I've read in other sites say this is too steep, and to aim in the $250-$300 range. Now, most of the ones I read are from 2010---does anyone know if this is still the going rate? I don't want to undercut the operators, but I also don't want to pay double the market rate in Cusco

Any other tips/suggestions much appreciated! Thank you very much! :D
