Ryanair have announced plans to send free text message alerts to customers whose flight is delayed by over 90 minutes.

The new service will alert customers to the likely duration of the delay and their new departure time. It has been developed as an additional aspect to the budget airlines' existing email, text and website communications; a customer service aspect which Stephen McNamara - Ryanair's CEO - believes already makes the airline 'the No1 customer service in Europe'.
Ryanair predict that the SMS alerts will be particularly useful during periods of severe disruption such as bad weather, ATC strikes or widespread airspace closures - like the volcanic ash incident that struck Europe in 2010.
