I heard from UA FA acquaintance in SEA that they just got an email today saying they are shutting down SEA FA base and offering everyone to move to SFO or to take a buy out if they are within the retirement range.

It's not a rumor but fact.

The LAS & FRA crew bases might be next to get closed down.

What does this mean for their flights to and from Seattle?

That they will be crewed with FAs based in other places. Shouldn't have any impact to operations from a passenger perspective.

    Hardly.

Does the presence of the crew base dictate the number of flights in and out?

Crew bases are located where the airline has the most flights. It would be an indicator that management does not expect to increase flights and/or expects flights to decrease when they shut a crew base. Given elimination of NRT & ANC from SEA, and near elimination of LAX... it's not surprising that they are shutting the base, but yes shutting a crew base goes along with shrinking operations.

By the way, how does it work with reserves? If a flight attend gets ill overnight, do they have any reserves or do they have cancel or delay until someone can fly in?

    They fly someone in.

And they can still run a ton of flights without a base there. Just look at MCO.

On a typical day there are at least 10 UA departures before the first inbound flight from a UA hub arrives. MCO is probably similar.

Does LAS still have an FA base? BOS? CO always operated with far fewer FA bases while UA had a lot of non-hub bases. Different scheduling philosophies.
