AZ 702, an A319 from Algeria to Istanbul with a stop at Rome FCO. It was taxiing to the gate when three immigrants from Algeria opened the over-wing exit and fled. The pilot stopped the plane, police swarmed runway searching, but the three escaped. It occurred about 8 p.m. May 13, 2015.

18 more Algerians still on board the plane were refused entry to Italy.

Article from La Stampa in Italian.

Article says that they succeeded in fleeing. By the time the police shut down the runways and blocked the area they were no where to be found.

Seems plausible. We saw a similar case in India recently. Doors to airside perimeters still have slam bars.

IST is a choice destination for recruits headed to support ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

Correction, I just reread the story. The plane was taxiing out to the runway to take off for IST.

Is this a flight where they don't change equipment at Rome? My Rome transits have generally been non-schengen to shengen or vice versa. If they had to deplane, does non-schengen to non-schengen require any kind of document check?
