Rio in the Movies

  1. With its larger-than-life landscape, colourful wildlife and attention-grabbing locals, Rio de Janeiro is the perfect setting for an 3D animated adventure, and it’s clear that the blockbuster movie Rio will have kids all over the world dreaming of a visit to the cidade maravilhosa.
And it’s a refreshing change to see Rio celebrated on film as a vibrant, magical place (albeit one where endangered birds are at risk of being kidnapped…). Historically, celluloid depictions of Rio de Janeiro have tended to focus on the harsher aspects of life in the city, with guns and violence taking centre stage.
Classic films such as Cidade de Deus (City of God) and the Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad) movies should be applauded for drawing attention to the bleak realities of drug and gun crime in Rio de Janeiro, but it would be a crying shame to overlook the city’s many wonders and concentrate purely on the negative aspects of life here.
While The Fast and The Furious Five, also set in Rio de Janeiro and also out this Easter, plumbs the usual ‘girls, guns and gangs’ cliches, Rio the movie is all about celebrating this most colourful of cities in all its kaleidoscopic glory. I’ll be heading to the cinema this week to see it (all in the name of, erm, research of course…) so watch this space for a full review. [IMG]
