  1. [IMG]It’s hard not to get swept up in the romance of Rio de Janeiro. The balmy heat, magnificent landscape, barely-clad beach bodies and sultry samba all combine to get pulses racing, and it’s hard to think of a sexier city to spend Valentine’s Day.
The good news for romantic couples planning a Valentine’s break in Rio de Janeiro is that Brazil doesn’t officially mark the day (the equivalent, ‘lover’s day’ falls on June 12), so you won’t face fully-booked restaurants and bumped up prices.
The bad news is that Valentine’s Day falls on a Monday, when many Rio de Janeiro restaurants are closed, so do check in advance if your romantic dining spot of choice will actually be open.
Whatever your price range, Rio’s romantic restaurants will have something to suit. Here are our top picks for each price range:
Cipriani. For a spot of old-school glamour, you can’t beat the chic Italian restaurant at the enduringly elegant Copacabana Palace hotel. Dress is formal, advance booking is essential, and diners are politely requested to turn off their phones before entering the dining room, so you can rest assured that your romantic meal will not be interrupted by endless phonecalls.
For something a little special, head up into the hills of Santa Teresa, and keep on climbing until you reach Aprazivel.
This hilltop restaurant offers al-fresco dining in a tropical garden lit with twinkling fairy lights, and offering stunning views over downtown Rio and Guanabara Bay.
Santa Teresa has more than its fair share of excellent restaurants, and Espirito Santa is a romantic spot that avoids being either overformal or overpriced. Bag a candle-lit table on the balcony, and you can soak up the views of this historic neighborhood as you enjoy the culinary delights of the Amazon.
    Go Back
If you’re based in the Zona Sul, chances are that Barril 1800 will quickly become a firm favourite. With friendly service and a location right in front of Ipanema beach, this is a spot that manages to be romantic without being over the top. Traditional Brazilian dishes and seafood are the order of the day, and this is also a nice spot for romantic post-beach drinks.
    Inexpensive Date
Even couples on the tightest of budgets can afford to have a romantic evening meal in Rio de Janeiro. Head down to Ipanema beach front, find the beach bar whose menu and prices most appeal, and sit down to simple bar snacks and icy cold beers or potent caipirinha cocktails by the beach. It doesn’t get much more romantic, and you won’t need to spend a fortune.
