Rio’s Arty Party Gets Started This Weekend

  1. This weekend (May 20-22) will see Rio turn into a giant arty party venue as the city hosts the third annual Viradao Carioca event. As in 2010 and 2009, the mega-festival will see a completely free programme of music, dance, theater and cinema events take place across the festival, with the musical emphasis on MPB (classic Brazilian pop), but also taking in hip hop, rock and electronica.
Culture Vultures can feast on a banquet of street dance, poetry readings, theater and a whole lot more besides, with the action taking place at venues across the city.
While there will be musical and cultural shenanigans aplenty happening in far flung areas of Rio’s North and West Zones, the most accessible programme of events for tourists takes place at Aproador – the scenic spot between Ipanema[IMG] and Copacabana beaches. The action kicks off on Friday evening with performances from Brazilian rock-pop acts including 1980s favorites Biquini Cavadao, and continues until late on Sunday night.
As is the norm at Brazilian cultural events, expect the gathered hordes to be fuelled by ample supplies of chilled beers and refreshing caipirinha cocktails, both of which can be easily and expensively bought from the many street vendors present at the shebang. With more than 50 hours of attractions, the event is one of the cultural hightlights of the year – check local press on Friday for full listings for the event.
