While going through some photos from past trips, I came across this awesome sign.

I don't have much detail about the photo. What I do know is that it was taken on a trip around New England in the summer of 2011 in Providence, Rhode Island.

I think that it was taken at Roger Williams National Memorial. Kim and I had visited the park to find out about the founder of Rhode Island. I believe that the sign was outside one of the entrances.

I love how the sign doesn't have any text. I think most would agree that the image on the sign would get it's message across just about anywhere in the world.

The problem is that even people who attach a leash rarely know how to use it. If you don't make your dog heel, or if you attach a leash and then let go of it, the leash becomes more hazardous than the dog. The idiots who let their leash stretch across the sidewalk annoy me to no end.

I agree that proper use of a leash is important. I do have to admit, however, that my dog does not walk on my heel all the time. If we are passing someone, I do make sure she is not in their way as best I can.

The worst, and most dangerous, IMHO, is the extenda-leash. I have seen dogs run completely across a street while on those things. What's the point if you can't even keep your dog from doing the thing that is most likely to kill it?!

Fine by me. I understand dogs will be dogs. My beef is with reckless owners.

I came across these signs on a river island near Vienna -- it's a peaceful recreational area.

What on earth does the blue one tell you you're not supposed to do? Are dads not allowed to hold their daughters' hand? Is it saying creapy men in suits and fedoras are not supposed to kidnap young girls? I'm confused by that one.

It's not a very helpful sign if it makes no sense at all, is it? At least the dog on a leash and no dog pooping ones are really obvious.

Seems that the kid is trying to get away. Maybe it is one to alert people that there are perverts in the area. After all there recently was a story about a town that put up signs saying there were prostitutes ahead.

I presume there's a roadway nearby: when I've seen it the sign means
(unintuitively) "no pedestrians in roadway" and often is paired with
the same sign without the red stuff, meaning "pedestrians allowed
    in roadway".

That is probably the most logical reading of it, and I'm sure context is very helpful in this situation.

That said, I like my "Kidnapping by creepy guys in suits and fedoras is not allowed" interpretation. :D

The one I recall most clearly had the adult silhouette and the child
silhouette somewhat chummy, so no menace there. It was at a
park near the Viktualenmarkt in Munich.

I was just as puzzled myself, and took a picture for that reason. Most likely the intent here was noise abatement. The area was a very peaceful wildlife refuge. Most roads and paths were paved, but no motor vehicles allowed. So under the circumstances I guess the blue sign meant "no unruly/loud toddlers allowed".

Hmm... I assume the sign facing the other way looked the same except for the red bar? If so, which version was facing toward people who were entering the refuge and which version was facing those who were departing the refuge?

I may have overlooked the signs facing the other way, when I was hiking there -- so can't confirm your version. It often happens that I notice more details on photos than on the original objects/scenes. One thing I am certain though is that the area in the photo is not near the entrance to the island.

I've found some very interesting bathroom signs. One of the best was in Sri Lanka. It showed a guy peeing in every direction, but the right one, with a red bar through this activity. I've always loved the Indonesian ones showing no squatting on the toilet. Wish I had the pictures handy.

Actually saw one of these in NYC at a Chinese/Pakistani Restaurant near the Empire State Building. Had to get mapwife and show it to her. It was actually on the outside of the Restroom to help identify the Restroom.
