I don't have much experience with Starwood awards. I transferred a bunch of miles to SPG last year from Amex, and then the trip was cancelled. So I'm trying to use these SPG points now. I booked a free night award for the Sheraton Times square NYC. I'd like to upgrade to a club room, and not sure if I can use points to upgrade a free night reservation, or if point upgrades only apply to paid nights?

    Hi DJP_707,

I would recommend to call the SPG hotline where one of our colleagues can help you find what is available. Click here to find all contact options.

SPG Champion, thanks for the quick reply!

DJP, as a general rule, you can't upgrade a points reservation with points. However, if a club room is available at that property, they likely have a rate to redeem points for it. As SPG Champion suggests, you can work with a call center to do that. Not all room categories are online when it comes to award redemptions with SPG, so a quick call is usually in your best interest.

@Pizzaman: I was able to get a suite at the Sheraton Toronto for an extra 500 points per night when I called. The trip was December 2014. And since the room was not ready, they upgraded me to a suite with a Jaccuzi.

And I am but a lowly Gold.

That's great, and not surprising. Lots of room categories not online. Shadow inventory is one of the quiet perks of SPG.

I too called, and the agent was super nice, she kept thanking me for being a SPG member. She offered me a prem room upgrade for 1000 points, and a club room for 2500 additional points. Which was exactly what I was looking for. I never new additional awards were available by calling and at reasonable point price too. Thanks for the info.

I like the idea of incremental point redemptions for better rooms. IHG needs to take note and do this. Hilton needs to make theirs more reasonable!
