I just noticed our reservation at the Parker Meridien in NYC is showing a $10 resort fee for internet and local calls. I'm a plat member so this is basically charging me $10 a night for nothing.

I'm interested in what the conditions are for a property to charge a resort fee and in Starwood's position with regards to the 'offerings' basically duplicating what members would receive anyway as elite benefits.

From my point of view, it's deceitful as it doesn't show up in the quoted room rate online. I would much prefer hotels just quoted a higher price if they want to charge more.

We're locked in now but this would be a reason for me not to stay at a hotel.

    Unhappy at the moment.

Thanks for the question. I doubt we are going to be able to post anything official with regard to "resort" charges; however, in this particular case, it isn't termed as a resort charge. Rather, they call it a "facility" fee and it appears in the Terms & Details of every paid rate I can find listed for Le Parker Meridien New York:

Facility Fee: USD 10.00 USD 10.00
USD 10.00 Per Room / Per Night

As far as the HSIA being included in this facility fee and your benefit for complimentary HSIA as part of your SPG benefits, they are supposed to offer something else in place of it, but you may have to ask for this at check-in.

    Hope that helps.

    Thanks William

I'm still very opposed to resort or facility fees, but understand the situation a little better now. FYI, they offered us two bottles of water from the minibar per day as a platinum benefit. It'll do I guess ;)

You may be satisfied with 2 bottles of water, but I'd be insulted :(
If this is a charge that everyone must pay, WHY don't they just include it in the room rate? This is the kind of thing (disingenuous) that drives me away from certain hotels -

I had a similar experience at another property not related to this thread. Resort fees charged yet day after day I couldn't access the beach nor 'resort' amenities. Unfortunately, I misunderstood and was offered 2 bottles of water only! Not per day!

I completely agree. I am not satisfied with two bottles of water, but it's better than nothing.

In the future I will try to avoid hotels that choose to gouge their guests with these spurious charges... Like you say, I'd rather they were honest about it and included it in the room rates.

On the other hand, the hotel has treated us very well in every other way ;)

The LM Parker also used to charge to use the swimming pool. Now it's included in this new fee. So there's that.

    Cheers,

The Parker properties are hurting royally due to their corruption oriented rip offs of SPG corp. They need all the fees they can get to pay off that debt.

But more generally the cost of lodging should just be part of the room rate. I guess they do it to appear cheaper on the travel search engines.

And I think Resort Fees is not eligible for Starpoints.

Anything resembling a resort fee at this property is quite funny...and the prop's way of saying F U to both Starwood and it's loyalty members.

I was actually really impressed with this hotel apart from the 'facilities fee'. Review coming soon :)

It's just another way to screw the customer, in many cases. Especially as an elite, where you are given most of the benefits already.

What's next? Bed utilization fee? Toilet paper fee?

I still remember when resort fees were new in 2001. I used a Free Friday (remember those?) at the Westin of Hilton Head, SC, which had a $10 resort fee. The receptionist took it off because 'at our hotel, free means free!' So I paid zilch & earned 30 Starpoints on it as if I had paid it ;) !

Myself as well. I have visited some properties that immediately have a solution for this situation and others that don't understand or care about it. I avoid the latter and patronize the former.
