USAToday: Report: US Airways brings takeover plan to AA creditors

    Hi all,

I did not see this posted.

Certainly no secret that US is interested in AA...

If US and AA merge the new entity would be a OW airline. I don't see how anything else works.

Dislike.... But not surprising for sure. If I was a AA Elite, I'd be very worried of a merger with US.

One can always hope.. ;) Especially since the proposing airline is *A.. Would hate to lose US to OW though.. Right now, they're a much reliable option than UA..

I can hope SQ, OZ, LH and NH quit *A and join OW, but that doesn't make it likely. ;)

A combined US/AA staying in *A means OW is left without a US partner and that in the past few years 4 of the U.S.'s major airlines have consolidated and entered into a single alliance against DL in ST. I don't see that passing muster with regulators or OW's members allowing their U.S. partnership to fall apart. They might as well just fold up shop if they cannot move people within the US.

I dunno. US+AA merger could make the CO/UA look like a piece of cake

I would like to give Doug Parker a bit of advice that my parents gave to me many years ago: "Finish chewing and swallow what you have already eaten before opening your mouth to talk."

US Airways is my new goto airline when Air Canada is too expensive. I'd hate to seem them leave the Star Alliance :(

Being an Executive Platinum with AA and a platinum (formerly chairman's) with US Airways I hope and pray that they do not merge. Service with American is one hundred times better than with US Air and Doug Parker doesn't even believe than watching a movie on a five hour flight is important. Any other merger would be better than with US Air.

I have to agree with the jist of your argument. There is little in common between the two cultures and especially their approach to customer service. While it may be necessary to merge the two entities in order to assure an orderly future utilization of AA's resources, it would be very worrying from the perspective of this customer at least. After going through the CO-UA merger, it really doesn't matter what name survives, the end result is going to be Doug'y International Airlines.

I find all of this discussion very interesting and am curious about more detailed thoughts. I haven't flown AA in many years and can't remember ever having flown US Airways or America West. What are their corporate and employee cultures like respectively? How different are they in comparison to the different cultures of say PMDL and PMNWA or PMCO and PMUA? From my more senior flight attendant friend at DL who has at least one sister who was at NWA, it sounds like the employee culture was pretty drastically different, especially with regards to the employee-management relationship. What is it particularly about US and AA that makes everyone think they aren't compatible culturally?

And so I am. I was dreaming of DL/AA merger, but fat chance of that happening.

I'd be quite angry if my AA miles were to become DL miles under their existing system and have to burn off my current balance in a short period of time.

Great, but if you can't redeem them at reasonable levels for Y/J based on DL's 3 tier system and you cannot redeem them for F class awards on DL or partners, that perk rather pointless to me. Not to mention the fees for award travel originating outside of the US.

North America to Australia with AA miles? 75K in Y and 145K in F

North America to Australia on DL? 100K at the lowest level up to 180K for Y, 150K at the lowest up to 370K for J on DL.

    More trauma here: LINK.

Those 145K with AA miles gets you to Australia on QF in First class, maybe in the A380. DL's 150/370K gets you there in Business. So it's likely I'm paying almost 2x as much for a lower class of service on DL? Woo.

Actually, if I was DL with miles that didn't expire that were continually accumulating as liabilities on my balance sheets, I'd probably like a system that required redeemers to pay 2x/3x the going redemption rate at AA/US/UA, too. :D

Not to mention, keeping miles from expiring on AA is ridiculously easy. I'd wager that miles expiration is a non-issue for most FFers.

The merger between US and America West was very poorly handled. It took years for their systems to be fully integrated and anytime I flew with a former America West crew, they truly had disdain for their new airline.
The worst thing about a possible merger is that Doug Parker would change US airway's service to a step above Spirit if he could. If you are a shareholder you might like him, but as a traveler I think he is the worst CEO of any major airline.
His comment that movies are not needed on long domestic flights because everyone has their own systems to watch is truly absurd. I fly over 100,000 miles per year and other than bringing my own headphones, I expect to be provided with movies or TV when I am flying (especially in first class).

Who cares if fees to use them are higher and it typically costs more miles to get somewhere...??
