If you depart the original 1947 border insurance won't cover.

Unless you know the country very, very well I wouldn't advise it. First of all the Israelis drive like maniacs (and I say that as a native New Yorker who's driven in many different countries. Second, even with a map if you don't know the roads you may inadvertently find yourself in the middle of a neighborhood that doesn't take kindly to an Israeli license plate, especially when tensions are high.

Israel has an excellent public transport system.

Though it's true that the driving in Israel may be a bit intense, IMHO it is grossly overrated. I recently rented and drove throughout Israel and it wasn't difficult at all. If you can drive in Manhattan during the day, Israel driving will be easier.

World Mastercard insures Israel. Other variants don't. Red line & green line aka 47 and 67 borders do not matter. Hertz, Avis, and Sixt recognize US elite status but don't expect much from your upgrade. If anyone needs a car, shoot me a PM and I will forward it to my TA buddy who gets better rates than what I can find myself.
