Finally, Japan is getting an SPG Amex next week. Link below in Japanese:

    Japan SPG Amex

From my brief reading of the conditions in Japanese, benefits appear to be:

    SPG gold status
    1 starpoint / 100 yen spend
    2 stays / 5 nights towards status
1 free night (cat 1-6) per year
10,000 starpoints after 100,000 yen spend

Looks like a card to carry rather than use after the initial spend, but awesome news nonetheless :D

Looks like a pretty decent card for Asian standards.

Yeah, we don't get much out here ;)

One caveat is the huge annual fee: 32000 yen!

Hi, should I recommend this to a friend of mine in Japan? She is a Japanese citizen. 1) are there alternate resources for her to meet her spend like VR. or gift cards? 2) Can she add someone to the account in the same household? 3) Is there an amazon friendly source there? Thanks.

That's going to depend on your friend's goals and spending patterns... because of the large annual fee, this is a pretty specialized card and will not be for everyone. For now I would say only SPG fiends would be interested (for the status boost and free night).

For more information (in English) on other cards and points opportunities in Japan, I have a cheap ebook on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.jp aimed at beginners :)

And happy to answer specific questions here to the best of my ability, of course :D

Looks like this card loses out on the extra 1 starpoint that the US version has. But the status and free night yearly makes up for that... up to Cat 6 property wow!

I wonder if the free night count towards yearly and lifetime status.

/me prays SPG Amex comes to Singapore.

Thanks. Got your ebook to help that friend, and wish I knew that I could have done this in Japan when I lived there for 8 years, on and off... but then I would have missed out on my glory days backpacking and spending time in some very interesting youth hostels worldwide.

    Thanks!

You also make a very good point. While there are definite benefits to playing the hotel points and status game (like staying in really nice rooms), you do lose out a bit on the flavour of countries. I try to alternate holiday styles now (do one luxury trip with my wife, then a backpacking one with a friend, etc.) :)

    I got my card today!

I'd like to point out that from my understanding the One Free Night Certificate and 5 night/2 stay credit are upon renewal after the first year, and don't come with the initial year.

Also, if it wasn't clear in the original post, the 10,000 bonus starpoints after 100,000 Yen (USD1028) spend is only one time and spend must be reached within 3 months of joining.

    That won't be a problem.
