I would appreciate suggestions for the most efficient use of MR points for a flight from CMH --> LAX. I'm also open to nearby airports. July 5 - July 7 or 8. Sitting on 195,000 and pretty new to this specific points program.

I know of the Avios angle, but I'm clearly missing something because I can't for the life of me figure out how to price that out. I have plenty of UR points and UA miles but those are being reserved for a much larger vacation this fall. I also have about 350,000 Hhonors points, and I would consider using those if there was any reasonable option.

I really appreciate and welcome any suggestions!

You won't get it on Avios because there are no saver awards available. If there were it would price as 14,500 via ORD, 17,000 via JFK or 17,500 via DFW each way in Y. http://www.wandr.me/Avios-Calculator.aspx

It is a $600+ ticket so not great options even on a revenue choice. At least you can redeem on DL if you want at the ultra high level, though it isn't a great value.

Thanks for the quick response and the great link! At least now I have a good tool to use to see what my low level redemptions should be like. Still about two weeks out. Who knows what might show up in the meantime.

Amex points can be transferred into Aeroplan, whose miles can be used for United &or USAirways flights. Plus Aeroplan does not charge short-notice fees :) , but does charge an extra ~$28 in taxes on domestic USA itineraries. USAirways does have availability CMH--CLT--LAX on July 5 in First & returning noonish from Long Beach, Burbank, Ontario, or Orange County on July 8 via PHX--CMH in both classes, but AC does not allow split-class awards, so you would need to transfer 50K Amex per person into AC for First both ways.
