    Elite status
    * It's one of the easiest statuses to achieve -- you start off with 1000 miles when you open the account and need to accumulate only 4000 for Star Alliance Silver and 20,000 (within 12 months) for Star Alliance Gold.

    * They send you a card valid for 3 years but under the terms and conditions of the program (which is still too new to have tested this in practice, and it seems too generous to last) status appears permanent as long as you keep your account active.

    Mileage Earning
    * Mileage earning is generous for premium cabin fares (150% and 200% earning on business class and 300% for paid first).

    * Some discount United fares earn only 50% flown miles (although 500 mile minimum applies), while US AIrways earns at 100% regardless of fare but without minimum.

    * There's no elite status bonus mileage earning.

    Award redemption.
    * There are some nice award values like US to Europe and North Africa is only 90,000 miles roundtrip in business class.

    * They allow one-way awards for half the miles.

    * There are, however, no stopovers permitted and only one connection allowed each way -- so perhaps the toughest routing rules I've seen from any airline (other than programs like Avios and LAN's which charge separately for each flight segment).

    * A few months back they introduced some improvements on the award redemption side, allowing changes to date and time of an award after booking (previously you had to cancel and start over and there was a penalty for doing so) and reducing the cancellation penalty (20 euros for mileage redeposit).

    Overall grade: B

The extremely generous star alliance gold earning gets it an A even if I never use my miles.
