    Alright-newbie question here.
I am trying to book a united award trip with a "free one-way"
Here is my routing that I am hoping for...
    GRB(with multiple stops)-OGG
    OGG (with stops)-to ORD
    GRB-SNA (FREE ONE WAY)

Am I able to have my free one out of GRB even though my roundtrip ends in ORD?
Still pretty new to this and trying to figure out the open jaw concept.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    What airline are you flying?
You may be able to stop in your US gateway city on the way to Maui both ways.
John Wayne is not a gateway but LAX is.
A short drive or Super Shuttle ride to SNA from there.
If I read you correctly you want an additional trip to SNA. This will not be allowed no matter the airline.
Stopovers are on route and you would be backtracking.
Check your airline routing guide for allowable routes or give us more information.

I was looking to do the free one way with United as they allow it on round trip Hawaii flights (per MileValue blog). I was just trying to figure out if I would need to fly back into GRB in order to add the SNA flight.

Not for nothing, but most of this advice it pretty bad. UA doesn't care about gateway, for instance, and the thread is in the UA forum so it is likely that the OP is planning on using UA miles for the ticket.

Whether they'll allow the open-jaw at the stopover (sometimes yes, sometimes no) or the significant backtracking (also, ~50/50) often depends more on the agent than anything else. But there are no strict rules to that effect one way or the other on UA awards.
