Questions About Increasing Ticket Flexibility / Lowest Refundable Fare

    I want to fly roundtrip, domestically in first class. I picked flights on united.com and was presented with a cost. Result: Fare Class: United First (P). Fare Rules: V2UP14N3

    Then appeared an offer to "Choose this fare and enjoy additional flexibility":
    • Lowest-available refundable fare
    • Fee-waived, same day-flight changes (when available)

    The offer's increase in price is not a lot and refundability would be desirable in this case. So I clicked on that offer. Result: Fare Class: United First (Z). Fare Rules: Q2UP7Y3

    Then appeared another offer to "Choose this fare and enjoy additional flexibility":
    • Refundable fare
    • Fee-waived itinerary changes
    • Fee-waived, same day-flight changes (when available)
    • MileagePlus bonus Premier qualifying miles

    Out of curiosity I clicked on that offer. Result: Fare Class: United First (F). Fare Rules: YUAUP3

    QUESTIONS:
    1. How come "Refundable fare" is an additional benefit of the second increase? I thought I got refundability with the first increase.
    2. What does "refundable fare" really mean?
    3. How do I know when I'm getting a fare I can cancel and get all my money back?
