I just priced out two reward tickets for a return trip YYZ-DXB next spring. I wanted to compare redemption levels and costs for business versus economy.

The difference in points I can understand (160,000 for two Y, 270,000 for two J), but the taxes, fees, and surcharges defy logic.

How does AC justify charging $1,439.72 on the Y ticket, and $822.72 on the J? A big difference is in the fuel surcharge - why does an economy passenger get hit with a higher (double) fuel surcharge compared to a business class passenger?

In theory, you're occupying twice the floor area. In practice ... it's really part of the fare, even if no one (at any airline) will actually admit to that.

Twice the floor area in economy? Kidding, right?

Say what? Differential pricing to entrap the gullible VBITs, perhaps?

Duh ... it looks like I need a course in reading comprehension! I thought it was J that was much more ... I take it all back!

Most/all of the J itinerary is probably on airlines who don't ding you with the YQ on the reward ticket (TK, LX) while the Y travel is on carriers like AC/LH where you get dinged.

It baffles the mind, but I think you should definitely take advantage of it. Save one cent in fees per incremental AP mile spent ... and get free J seats as part of the bargain! :)
