    Hi there,

I was wondering how SPG calculates stays, I recently stayed at a Sheraton for 2 nights in one room and it looks like I got 2 stay credits for that. Days later I stayed at another Sheraton for 2 nights and received 1 stay credit. Is there something I'm missing? Almost looks like I was given extra credit. I ask because Platinum may be within my reach if I split up some upcoming stays for the rest of the year, but if that's not necessary, I'll keep my reservations as is. Thanks in advance.

It looks like you got lucky on the first trip. Usually it's 1 stay credit per block of consecutive nights in a room. If you're aiming for stays, you will need to break up your consecutive nights with nights in another hotel. Many people just alternate nights between nearby SPG hotels (if convenient) in order to fulfill the stay requirement.

Thanks, that's what I'm thinking but obviously didn't want to call SPG and ask.

If you are on the platinum challenge, you can search it under the hotels/spg threads, you can get more info from other folks that have gone through it. They also have information on their own website. Deals We Like has a write up on SPG with a link. I failed my challenge by 2 nights...miscalc on my side. the challenge is 18 paid nights within a 3 month period. You can sign up retroactively too.

    BTW, welcome to MilePoint JMS!

Thanks and great info, I think I just figured out the answer to my question, apparently my Starwood Amex gives me 2 stay credits. As for platinum I have to get 25 in a year, including reward travel which I think I might be able to swing since we often get a separate room for the kids.

Yes I've had gold for years just based on my Amex spending.

you might want to call and see if they'll give you a platinum status challenge. Since you've had gold they may not, but it would be a quicker way to get to Platinum.

Retroactive no longer counts; at least when I signed up for the plat challenge.

It is possible that they changed it. I signed up for a new challenge in July after April - June challenge wasn't met and they gave me June-August, where I fell 2 days short...sucks. I was going to call again to include August as I have 7 paid stays for August to go for August-October.

As a follow up, is Platinum all that worth it? Seems like there is no guarantee on suites which is what I really would want travelling with a family, I don't know if it's worth the hassle or if I'm trying to get it just to get it.

mine is sept to nov 30th. And they told me retro is not counted.

I asked myself the same thing; but seeing as though i'll get about 14 nights in 3 M anyways I think I will either go on a short trip or do a few bed runs.

Does the Platinum challenge work over the year? Like starting in December and finishing in February?
Is it really only "nights" and not stays? This sounds a little too easy compared to 25 stays... Do multiple room bookings count as multiple nights in the same hotel? Let's say 3 stays at one night at the same hotel on one SPG account = 3 nights?
    Thanks in advance guys!

    1. It should
    2. Nights only. That's why its limited to ppl who have never had status before.
    3. Yes; you can book up to 3 rooms per night, therefore translating to 3 night credit per calendar night. (I think I will do a 3room night stay at $59+tax vs the single night for $79 just to get to Plat)

    Very Nice! Thanks!
How do I apply for the challenge and can I set the timeframe by myself?

Yes, it's actually a credit of 2 stays/5 nights towards status w/the *Wd AmEx card. per year. It is not per/stay! If you also have the Biz card too -- you would get an additional 2 stays/5 nts status credit!;)

I know that it was true of the old status match rules, but is it still true for the Platinum Challenge?

Yep. If you've ever been Platinum before, you wouldn't be eligible for a Platinum Challenge. Not a problem for a Gold member who's never reached Platinum, however.

Platinum is well worth it as you will often get the suite upgrades. You can also get the Amex SPG business card which gives you an extra 2 stays credit per year.

Actually I don't think that is correct. You only get one night credit even if you book a night with multiple rooms on your reservation for the platinum challenge. It would count for multiple nights but one stay for a regular accrual towards gold or platinum. I called two different reps to confirm which is why I missed out on my last challenge. Have to think long and hard if I want to try again.

    William could you confirm?

The outcome very much depends upon how a property chooses to apply the stay. However, if you think that it needs to be reviewed, you can send an email to Program Services at research@starwoodhotels.com, attach your folio(s), and ask them to correct whatever you think is wrong.

I didn't see this mentioned but AFAIK the Platinum challenge is a once-a-lifetime thing. Make sure you're going to meet the guidelines in order to get full value out of it.
