Does anyone know when Qatar Airways will become operationally part of OW?
There is no official date yet but they've stated it will be late this year or early next at the latest.
Thanks DestinationDavid, I read that on the website, I just thought someone might know a more exact date. Thinking of taking a December trip to India on QR, but won't do it if I am not able to get my AA miles.
I read somewhere Q2 2014?
Last I heard was beginning of November 2013.
There's always a wide date range that they give. "End of 2013." "By close of Q1 of 2010." We've seen this with every new OW member in the last few years. Once there's an official date it'll have a press release and be published for all to see though, just like the official date for LAN affiliate LAM Colombia was published a few days ago (OCT 1).
Till then, it's all soft estimates that can change easily.
I have been waiting for this one, because it opens up the possibility of OW competing a little more with *A for African destinations like Addis...QA has competitive prices in that area.
How far in advance would we know? Or is it suddenly announced they are now part of the alliance and nobody had a clue until then?
Historically a formal join date has been announced some weeks in advance. And they usually stick to it, though no guarantees.
I think it will be beginning of next year, just like Malaysia Airlines, it was end of 2012, but officially it's Feb 01, 2013.
I believe it will be very very soon, in 2013, maybe November, but Qatar would surely like to open a new shiny airport in Doha at the same time...
Normally codeshare and joint frequent flyer benefits precede the actual alliance joining so you're likely to see that between AA and QR before December. As David and Seth say, we will know when it is announced and probably not before then.
Yes, but in recent history not elite-qualifying credits until the actual alliance entry date.
BA/QR have already there, but BA is QR's sponsor, so it is kind of natural to be the first one... soon AA will follow...
Good point. I took GCarvalho's 'miles' comment at face value but should have thought about EQM also.
What about SriLankan? Their future membership was announced quite a long before QR's, but still very likey that they will join later than QR... I have a C flight with them in January14, but will likey to miss earning elite-qualifying miles with AA... or BA for that matter... and paid C will go unused...
Released by OW today: QR joins on October 30. LINK.
Great news... even sooner that everbody was thinking...
I think I received a reply now...
Guys, thanks for all the comments... Just received the communication from OneWorld, Oct 30 it is. Great news!!
Yup, I was off by one day.
We'll all remember your inaccuracy, or should I say lack of precision. In the future will you please give us the time of the official press release, preferably in GMT/CUT?
This inaccuracy is really bad bad service from MP... Off by one day... you could fly to moon and back in this time (well, not really)
