Qantas pulled its airline safety video featuring Ambassador-at-Large John Travolta as part of the ongoing industrial dispute with long-haul pilots, according to Australian and International Pilots Assn. (ATW Daily News, July 21). Travolta, who has been fronting the airline's safety video, says in the video there is no one he would rather having flying the plane than a QF pilot. However, the union said this message conflicts with management's stance in the industrial dispute over outsourcing.

Personally I am glad to see the video go. I always felt it inappropriate that an airline who bleats on about being the national airline of Australia should use an American actor.

    *facepalm*

The video was a special production for their 90th anniversary, was always envisaged with a limited shelf life, and was never pulled because some whiny pilots got their knickers in a twist over bargaining claims for them to get spa treatments.

And worse, ATW Online should know much better than to write utter rubbish like that article. And scarily, the article is by Geoffrey Thomas, who damm well knows better than to write such BS.

Anyway, I'm not even sure it's really been completely "pulled". We were subjected to Travolta on QF127 on 17 August, after having had a few copies of the (equally cringeworthy) non-Travolta in the previous two weeks.

It takes some time to swap all of the video cassettes. So the process may not yet be complete.

And let's not forget those tapes are in very short supply, specially for the older units for which the tapes went end of life production towards the end of last year, and the effects of the Japanese earthquake for which production of high-end media still has not resumed.

Just another reason why all airlines should go fully digital and mass storage for IFE.
