Not a bad way to spend NYE. Hopefully I'm still able to fly when I'm 80+

"At Sydney's Domestic terminal 3, the pensioner will follow the signs to the departure gate marked "Antarctica" and collect his return ticket. By the time he arrives back in Sydney at 6am on New Year's Day after his flight over the ice continent, he will be just three flights short of the magic 1000."

For the trivia buffs - these Antarctic charter flights SYD-SYD must be one of the longest "domestic" flights in the world?

Mostly self-funded travel was pretty impressive.

Even on self-funded travel, 1,000 flights isn't necessarily so extraordinary. I'm almost entirely self-funded, and have got over 900 in my log - about half of them on one airline and a further quarter on a second. It would be a stretch if you were only doing simple round-trips, but any long-haul trip with just a little complexity will add sectors to the total very quickly.

The 996 was only the QF tally.

    Apparently many others with
many other airlines - past and present.

I had interpreted the thread title as saying that someone had flown to Antarctica 995 times. THAT would be impressive.

I'd bet he (and you) are probably nevertheless 1-percenters as far as travel goes. (me, too... I haven't counted my trips, but as a UA MM and 20+ years of TATL travel it should add up...)

What I find more impressive than his love of flying (at his age), is keeping track of his flights.
