Dozens of people were rushed off a Qantas flight for medical treatment in Sydney on Thursday after a stomach bug struck mid-journey, triggering a mass vomiting episode.

Qantas said a "number of passengers travelling in the same group on QF28 (between) Santiago and Sydney became unwell with a gastro intestinal illness" on the 14-hour journey to Australia.
Media reports said between 20 and 30 passengers were vomiting as they disembarked in Sydney and were met by a fleet of ambulances.

"It is believed the illness was contracted before boarding the aircraft and symptoms became evident during the flight," Qantas said in a statement.

Sounds like Norovirus to me. Have had it - it's terrible and sets in super fast.

Perhaps the tour group was actually having a contest to celebrate the end of their tour:

Had similar a few months ago when a group who had been in Mexico joined the flight LAX SYD. We taxied in lax, but before takeoff someone was unwell. Call for doctor. Went back to the gate. More docs examined, passenger removed, luggage removed, cleaners came aboard. Ready to leave. Almost... Then another passenger unwell. Removed. Luggage searched for & removed. Cleaners aboard...

    Finally left.

During the flight, another couple unwell... On arrival in SYD the Quarantine folk came onboard to clear us. & the unwell were given immediate medical attention.

As it turns out, a couple of the group were ALREADY unwell in LAX before boarding. Apparently had a last (great) lunch in Mexico at the end of their holiday before heading up to LAX for the flght home!!!

Only one of the whole group wasn't barfing!!

The QF flight attendants were amazing. Attended the unwell. Moved passengers. Cleaned. Gave out PJ's to folk who needed them. Did a really really great job of looking after the needs & comfort of folk on that trip..
