QANTAS is putting up for sale 21 ageing Boeing 737-400 aircraft, known as the workhorse of the skies, as it cuts flights due to the uncertain demand for travel.

While the sale is a sign of the dire short-term outlook, it will give Qantas a timely boost to its bottom line, with industry estimates that the aircraft could fetch up to $20 million each.

Qantas has quietly begun seeking buyers for the first of 21 737-400s, all of which will be put on the block this year. Industry insiders say there is an appetite among low-cost airlines in India and south-east Asia for Qantas's ageing workhorses.

This can't be a bad move, I am surprised how much these old planes are worth.:)

Let's hope that they are in good shape metal fatigue wise. The Southwest incident reminds that too many cycles can have a negative impact.

I'm surprised that that great buyer of old used airplanes for cheap (Delta) isn't eager to purchase these beasts.

Here's hoping they flog off VH-OJP sometime soon (I'm guessing they'll keep it till the 380's are more numerous though). Just flew her from MEL to LHR. Tired looking interior. I know it's quite airworthy, but it's a clunker:)
