I have enough points for 2 RT tickets but won't have enough for the third until my statement closes in three weeks. I think I read that I can put a ticket on hold for one week. Is there something I can do to hold onto the third ticket?

Yes but make sure you make the third one as a separate reservation in case you think you might only use two.
Cancelling does not necessarily return them back into the system.

I'm not quite sure what that was responding to.

Ok I will spell out as clearly as I can for you. The answer to your question was YES.

I was only try to be helpful ( no good deed goes unpunished) by suggesting that if you put all three tickets on hold on a single reservation and find that you are unable to acquire the miles for all three (or for any other reason) if you still wish to travel using two award seats might to not be able to find those two or any seat for that matter.... having cancelled the three pax reservation and returning to aa.com to book the award for the two pax.
