Then we should slap a similar tax on the USA if this passes into their budget.

i think this is exactly what would happen. hopefully, the lobby on the USA side to prevent that would have the USA side drop it.

But the US is in deep debt. This seems like a cheap and easy way to make a cash grab. You don't think they'd do it anyway?

I really don't think this is workable, they are pushing for an more open border, not a more closed one and limiting the passage of people across the border will hurt both sides. Just another bad idea that hopefully will go nowhere.

ugh, as if transborder taxes and fees are not high enough already!

    lets see
    U.S Agriculture Fee
    U.S Passenger Facility Charge
    U.S. Flight Segment Tax
    September 11 Security Fee
    U.S.A Immigration User Fee

    now we will add the

    US is broke surcharge

    what next?

Unfortunately if it is just those ways of entry then it might stick> For those of us close to Buffalo or another border US airport we will just drive over and fly from there if we are doing it on our own dime. Just another reason that US flights internally are much cheaper if you start off your trip in the US.

    Not good for AC!

It would apply to any passenger flying in, originating in Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean. So the way I read it, Americans returning from those area would also pay the fee, No?

I'm not clear on this either. It makes sense that the American's would pay as well since the money being collected is suppose to be for helping with the security charges. Americans would also have to go through security.

I make sure I get full value for those security charges -- I refuse the nudie-scan and ask for the concier ... uhh, TSA agent, for the pat-down instead.

Actually, as one agent pointed out 'we're not the TSA' when I asked if I should take out my 11" MacBook Air which the TSA doesn't require to leave your bag... :p
