In three months, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International will become America's busiest passenger plane airport operating with just one runway.

Starting May 6, when one of the two runways at FLL airport is taken out of service, travelers will spend extra time sitting on the tarmac waiting for takeoff, airport officials predict.

They might arrive a bit late to their destinations.

And if something happens to tie up the sole runway — a plane's tire goes flat, for example — air travel will shut down until the runway is cleared.

"That's going to to cause chaos there," said former commercial pilot Alan Cohn, now a Learjet pilot and pilot-for-hire who occasionally flies at FLL. "If someone comes in and messes up the runway, that airport is closed."

The Hilton at the end of one of the runways is being torn down to make room for the FLL airport's expansion.

Not sure which Hilton you are referring to.
The property near Griffen Road (the only property that could possibly affected by this) is the Fort Lauderdale Airport Hilton should have be torn down 15 years ago.
It was a dump when Hilton had it back then, afterwards it became a member of another chain then a Wyndam and it reincarnated as the Airport Hilton again a few years ago
    with very little improvement.

A check on Hilton.com however shows its still bookable into Jan 2015.

Just an update. Still haven't experienced any tarmac delays with only 10L/28R open.. Anyways, I only remember using the other runway (cross) a couple of times in 20 years.

Probably because they're beginning with just tearing down the parking structure. (I guess!)
