Preferred Plus & Gold Room Upgrades

    Has anyone successfully gotten an upgraded room when they were/are Preferred Plus (Via Amex) or Gold?

    Currently I am PP and I just completed my 10th stay so I should be gold once SPG credits my stay but all 8 of previous stays (2 were from the Amex) I have never gotten an upgraded room. Always just the normal room that I booked. (once I had a Murphy bed in SJC.)

    I know that room upgrades are subject to availability, but in the case of the murphy bed I know there were better rooms available but I wasnt sure how to ask for them. Or do you have to ask?

    Preferred Plus and Gold member upgrades are based upon an enhanced room, in the same category as you originally booked, being available at check-in. An enhanced room would be defined as one on a higher floor, a corner room, a newly-renovated room or one with a preferred view.

    If you were expecting a shift in room categories, the hotels don't have to do that, but many do regardless.

    Ann okay I thought room upgrades were like stnd vs deluxe rooms.

    Don't expect much. Sometimes you will get a nicer view but other times you get stuck next to the elevator. Upgrades never seem to be "available" when I check in. SPG doesn't do much for you unless you are Plat.

    First time on milepoint, have a slightly obscure question. I am an AA member and SPG base level member, how I am able to get recognised as SPG Preferred Plus? The only links I can find are 'join now' and I don't want to start over with a new account.

    Call SPG. Tell them you're a AAA member (AA?). Give them your AAA account number. Ask them to add it to your marketing programs and upgrade you to Preferred Plus.

    Yes, that is how I was originally Preferred Plus. Just had to call! Now I'm gold, but the benefits are similar.

    Just a heads up now that you are Gold if you have existing reservations you may have tell them at checkin that you are a Gold member. I just hit Platinum and when I called the Plat desk thy told me that it would automatically update. But the last 3 stays I had I tell them I was Plat at the hotel in order to get the benefits.

    I am staying at the W for the Austin Do. Should I call the hotel in advance to make sure they update my reservations since I made the ressie while I was still gold?

    That, or call/chat with Platinum Concierge and have them do it for you.
