I'm sure the TSA will find a way to make life at the checkpoint even more irritating and to justify the hiring of even more bodies to perform inane tasks.

Actually, I'm surprised the TSA hasn't launched into the business of manufacturing their own terror plots and then thwarting them at the last minute. It's been a great ego boost for the FBI over the years to play this game so it's odd that an organization so intent on expanding its footprint hasn't done something like this.

They don't have to. It's much simpler to take normal activities and harmless events and spin them into potential plots, so as to justify increasing their footprint.

BA charged my friend an extra $80 to allow him to have a plastic toy gun for a video game in his checked baggage. Does that count as a good start?

They specifically asked if there are any toys that look like guns in the luggage. Not wanting to create any extra trouble for himself, he said yes. They said they need $80 charge for it. To be clear, it wasn't TSA, but the BA people, but seems like a good start for the shakedown.
