Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea - What to do?

  1. I am currently in Port Moresby on a business trip, and this is where I have been so far.

    • Downtown (not much to do)
    • Parliament Haus - interesting architecture, nice gardens
    • Bomana War Cemetery - 4,000 Australian, NZ, Papuan, British, etc WWII soilders are buried here. Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, this is a very moving and beautiful place. The gardens thrive in the tropical climate! It's located down a side street, off Sogeri road, a few miles out of town.
    • Laloki River gorge / Rouna Falls - Beautiful gorge which Sogeri road winds up. The waterfall at Rouna is visible from a roadside lookout
    • Royal Papua Yacht Club - The default expat hangout, It has themed nights (e.g. Tuesdays - Wok Night, Wednesdays - BBQ night, etc). Local expat members should be able to arrange a 1 month temporary membership card for you.
    • Jepello Restaurant - Italian food, good, but not great (although I am fussy). Located near Holiday Inn
    • Phoenix Chinese Restaurant - near Boroko FoodWorld
    • Palazzo Restaurant at Lamana Hotel
    • Bacchus Restaurant at Airways Hotel

I'm here for a little while longer, so if anyone has any recommendations, please reply here and I will check them out.

Hotel review coming soon in the Hotels thread.

Whats your impressions of PNG? Have you been there previously? What sort of work are you doing there?

I go to POM for work usually once or twice a year. There is not a lot to do and I think you have covered it all. Ella Beach is nice, but as always, be careful. Boroko markets on Saturdays is worthwhile, and there is a school near the town end of Ella Beach that has a good craft market one Saturday a month (I think second).

You could spend a day or afternoon at Loloata resort out in Bootless Bay. It is a short boat ride away from POM but feels like on another country. Safe and lovely.

You can go for a snorkel or scuba dive there, too. Owner Dik Knight is a lovely guy and usually onsite.
