The folks at SPG want to give advance notice to the MilePoint community that there will soon be a change in policy regarding status match requests from competing frequent stay programs. Starwood Preferred Guest is evolving its policy on status matches to Platinum to a Stay Challenge format beginning April 1, 2011.

Any contacts regarding a Stay Challenge offer will be done via email to the Platinum Concierge department. Any member wishing to apply for a Stay Challenge beginning April 1, 2011 can contact them at platinum.liaison@starwoodhotels.com in order to request consideration.

Members will be advised on the full requirements of their Stay Challenge and then contacted to advise if the Stay Challenge has been met. Should a member not successfully complete a Stay Challenge, they may request another once the original Challenge has expired.

Several questions, purely out of curiosity as I'm already Plat:

Must people applying for a challenge already have status in some other hotel program?

    Is there a fee?

Does one enjoy Plat status during the challenge?

Is there a limit on the number of times that a challenge for Plat can be done?

Can this be done by someone who has had Plat in the past?

I'm sure all of these questions will be answered if asked by members who email to request for information about a Stay Challenge. What is posted here is what I was given to relate to the community. Anything else is going to have be discovered by those who are interested in becoming Platinum through a Stay Challenge by communicating with Platinum Concierge via email.

I guess it's time to start pushing some non-Plats to give this a try!

Can former Plats participate in a Stay Challenge?

Does the evening before the change takes place really qualify as "advance notice?" ;)

Is it a Stay Challenge for anyone (eg American Airlines)
or just for people who can also prove equivalent status with other programs including Hilton, Hyatt and Gullible?

Nice to see SPG put some good earning requirements to those who play the status match game!

From what I have heard, no status with another program is required. On top of that, you can do the challenge more than once.

I originally asked my questions because I was wondering if almost anyone can become and remain Platinum this way. Will this lead to increased numbers of Plats and hence fewer good upgrades for us?

Thanks for the interest; however, I have no further information to impart. I'm sure that anyone interested in applying for a stay challenge to get to the Platinum elite level in SPG will have their questions fully answered by Platinum Concierge when their email is received.

I doubt there would be significant dilution...given geographical differences and the probability that not too many people (statistically speaking) would take advantage of this (I am presuming you cannot do this every year).

However I will post what I receive as the challenge in case anyone is interested.

  15. If it's anything like Hyatt Diamond status match, there is no fee, they offer you a challenge in which you do enjoy the Diamond status benefits, with Hyatt yes but this offer seems okay with repeat attempts, and I can't see why they'd knock you back if you were previously a plat.

here's the Hyatt Diamond Status Match FYI:

Regarding your inquiry, currently a Diamond Trial Offer is available.
You will receive trial Diamond membership for 60 days. However, you must
complete 12 nights in 60 days to maintain Diamond tier through February
of 2012. You will also receive 1000 bonus points on your first six
eligible nights within 60 days, up to a maximum of 6000 bonus points.

To find more details on our exclusive Diamond status please visit us
    online at:
    http://goldpassport.hyatt.com/gp/benefits/membership_diamond.jsp

I appreciate your support of Hyatt and the Gold Passport program. Please
let me know if I may assist you further.

    Sincerely,
    Hyatt Gold Passport Customer Service

    Dear Wally Wombat,

Thank you for your interest in our Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) Platinum membership level. We are pleased to offer you an opportunity to reach that level sooner through our Platinum level challenge.

If, within the next 90 days of accepting the status challenge, you have posted to your account 15 eligible nights, this would be in addition to any eligible nights that are currently posted to your account, we will be more than happy to upgrade your member status to Platinum once the nights have posted to your account. If this is agreeable to you, please let me know at your earliest convenience so that I may properly document your account.

So it's 15 nights in 90 days and you don't get temporary status in the meantime?

Hard to call it a Stay challenge if the challenge is based on nights ... ;)

I guess I don't follow your logic. Whether it is one night or fifteen in a given stay, it is still a stay.

This actually makes me pretty sad as I was hoping to get a status match for my up coming vacation this summer. It was going to be my "test" to see if I preferred SPG plat over other Diamond status. Now I must see what I will have to do. Wish this was April Fools joke.

Interesting that you have to do 15 of the 25 stays in 3 months rather than 6 or 7 stays which would the required amount if you divide 25 by 12 months then times by 3 months (90 days).

I guess in the end if you want to stay and really move over to SPG, you have been pretty keen and willing to put your money where your mouth is.

It is 15 nights in 90 days not stays in the challenge. All 15 nights can be during 1 stay and still qualify.
