*wood usually moves their point requirements around this time of year. Some hotels go up a category and some go down.
Any hints as to which hotels may move up or down in point requirement?

We see the return of peak season pricing (eg category 5 16k points instead of 12k), we already know about this change.

Overall hotel occupancy and revenue has goen up compared to the historic lows of a year and two years ago. Starwood didn't really lower award categories, but look for the categories to go up because the rates are higher than last year. At the same time note that rates are still lower than 3-4 years ago, so it'll still seem strange to some (!) that on the whole it'll take more points to redeem for a like property...

Stronger currencies mean that room rates are higher when priced in US dollars, so expect category increases in Japan.

We should know soon enough, though!

Best advice is if you think you might need an award at a property, book it now. If the category goes down you can cancel/rebook or even in some cases just reprice. If the category goes up you've locked in the lower price. And even if it's a speculative booking, provided you follow the cancel rules for the property, you can always get your points back...

According to Starwood, the new rates will be effective for bookings made 1 March or later. They have not announced which hotels will change categories - so book now if you have any plans. You can always cancel or redo the booking in the unlikely event that the category goes down.

Latest guess is that the hotel category changes may be released today.
