You know the deal... hey, maybe you've even done it yourself: stand by the fence at Maho behind Princess Juliana and wait for a take-off. Then just hang on for dear life...

Didn't work out too well for this girl though. She goes up against Jetblue's N568JB "Blue Sapphire" A320 and lost.

Fast forward to 30 seconds in if you're impatient... :)

Not sure I get why anyone would want to stand behind a jet engine that has the power to lift 175,000 pounds into the air?

Wow that's crazy. I'm surprised on how close people are allowed to get to the tarmac!

I wonder if there was any warning sign on the fence.

    We can't fix stupid!

Was that a thong bikini worn by the bystander rushing to the scene? If so, tray cool. :)

There used to be a sign, but the darn thing kept ending up in the ocean!

There's not much of a choice, unfortunately. There isn't room for a runway the other direction and the people are standing on a public road and a public beach. There are tons of videos of people "jet surfing" and of landings at the airport. The island faced a trade-off: do they push the limits to allow bigger commercial planes and all the extra tourism or do they keep things a little safer?

Not sure if you were joking or not, but there are lots of warning signs. Anyone who does that should know full well it's an awful idea.

Definitely understand, I have only ever been to St Marteen by cruise ship and that is a whole other nightmare when a hurricane or tropical storm hits close by.

Wow! I've seen SXM from a cruise ship, but didn't realize that folks could get up to the runway like that. I'm glad the girl turned out to be okay.

Surfing the fence is apparently "the" tourist activity at SXM... although the airport is also infamous for landings since the runway is immediately after the beach.

There's a reason I sat down at the fence. You can see just as well that way. ETA: I also wasn't *that* close. You can't really see the plane as well from the bunghole.

Gotta luv seeing 747's. Soon it will be on video only - certainly for airports like SXM

    Glad she's OK.

It just doesn't appear to be a very smart thing to do. Why would you want flying debris/rocks becoming projectiles into your body?

I like how the FO has the window open and waves as the plane turns onto the runway :)

Ouch! Though the woman who got injured looked like she was playing plane-chicken...not plane-spotting.

St. Maarten airport to boost security after jet blast injures woman
    http://travel.usatoday.com/destinat...curity-after-jet-blast-injures-woman/670865/1

St. Maarten's Maho Beach, a strip of sand just a few yards from the end of a short runway at the island's Princess Juliana International Airport, has long been a draw for plane-spotting tourists - many of whom ignore prominent warning signs about getting too close to a 100-m.p.h. blast from nearby jets.

But officials say they'll boost security even further after a recent YouTube video showed one particularly clueless thrill seeker losing her grip on the airport's chain link fence and being slammed into a concrete barrier during a JetBlue takeoff. The video clip - among many taken at Maho over the years - has generated more than 4 million views since it was posted last week.

Part of me thinks its a nice adrenaline rush, the other part of me thinks these people may be candidates for the Darwin award! That concrete divider between the beach and fence has gotta hurt when you slam into it!

I hope they don't block off the whole area I mean... I'd like to actually see this in person.

At the risk of sounding like a jackass, I hope this woman (or anyone else dumb enough to try this) doesn't procreate and spread her "stupid" genes on to another generation. :)
