"Delta maintenance crews, who towed the aircraft out of the grass, were evaluating the plane to determine if there was a mechanical failure, Scott said."

What else could it be? Pilots fell asleep while taxiing?

It could happen on icy taxiways/runways as well but since MX was a known factor already. *shrugs*

    Maybe texting while "driving"?

A more appropriate statement would be texting while driving a car with no brakes (or any other mechanical problem)
Pilots were likely high on adrenaline due to the emergency landing.

On a lighter note, they could both (Pilot and Co-Pilot) be hugging each other in tears for having survive and accidentally steered the plane off the runway. :p
