PIA Board of Directors members in a meeting have decided to ban the meal service on its domestic flights, sources in the airlines confided to TheNation on Friday. The decision will be implemented from August 1.

When contacted, a spokesman of the national flag-carrier said that the decision was taken keeping in view the security regulations since Civil Aviation was insisting the PIA to ban food on domestic flights. However, he said that only hot meal will be banned while snacks and other bakery items could be served on the domestic flights. He said that it was an international practice that no hot meal is served on domestic flights having flying time less than two hours. To a question, he said that it was not an economic drive rather compliance to the aviation rules.

A cost-cutting measure hiding behind a "security" concern? Or two for one.

Is the catering supply chain for domestic PIA flights somehow substantially different than it is for Pakistan-originating international PIA flights?

Does this elimination measure of hot meals on PIA domestic flights also apply to non-PIA domestic-only flights in Pakistan?
