Mr is currently working in Manila for three months. I am visiting him later this month. While I m there I am going to visit an orphanage with a donation of baby clothes. There is an Aussie baby clothes company who donate an outfit to charity everytime they sell one. I asked if they wanted me to take some to Manila on their behalf and they said yes.

While I am there I would love for everyone to make a loan to the Philippines. Any ideas on what we can do? A money bomb? Try to be on every loan for a few days?

Sounds good. Just need to work out a plan. I fly there on Saturday 22 June so maybe that weekend we could ask everyone to make one loan to the Philippines to help me travel safely.

That's where all my loans are, and I'll be making another this month, but probably before the 22nd.

Wish I would have read this before, I could have waited. 10 of the loans I made today were in the Phillipines. Oh well guess I'll have to make some more on the 22nd. Will be there a reminder sent out?

I'm at Brisbane airport. Tonight I will be in Manila. Anytime over the next week and a half I'd love for everyone to consider a Philippine loan.

Done, including Milagros who plans to spend $1,225 to purchase 20 boxes of fish to re-sell in the market. The amount request is just over 3 times her monthly income of $343.

I arrived last night. This morning we went for a walk and I encountered a familiar smell - Manila smells like Honiara. It was somewhat comforting to smell what I had known for six months of my life and the adventures I had then. This afternoon our taxi had a child knocking on the window. I had sunnies on and didn't look their way. Then this afternoon we went for a walk to get food and two children wanted money then followed us down the street even though Mr said go away. Nothing scary, just different. I had my room key and some money in my pocket so my hand went in there.

I just used my credit to make three loans. One I credited to our Milepoint team and the other two to Miss Sharp's team. It was a completely different lending experience knowing I am in this country.

I logged in to my other Kiva account and had enough credit to make another loan. Couldn't resist a gentleman in the Philippines named Randy :)

I had the experience of making a loan to a Vietnamese client when I was in Hanoi last year. It is a very different experience.

Yesterday I went adventuring with one of my Aussie mates. He owns an SUV. We visited the American war cemetery which is beautiful and sad. Lunch then shopping. The staff in shops are far nicer than in Oz. At home we would be greeted with 'hi guys' yet here it was good morning Sir, good morning Ma'am. I know we are judged as being wealthy when we walk into shops. It's weird but then I realise I'm carrying more than a month's average wages in my handbag. This morning I paid for my breakfast with a 1000 peso note - alot of people make around 7000 peso/month and here I was pulling it out like it was no big deal.

I know some of this sounds sad but I am enjoying my visit to Manila.

I should mention that my handbag is slashproof and worn across my body so I feel more secure than if I had a regular bag.

Yesterday morning I visited Mr at work. I took the team some chocolate biscuits which they loved.

My Aussie friend was feeling off so I caught a cab to the Mall Of Asia. It took almost an hour due to traffic. The fare was 300 pesos (AUD$7.50) so I gave him 320 pesos. Cheapest hour long cab ride ever for me. The prices in the shops are cheap for me but compared to their average income I wonder who can afford the items. I spent up big on some beautiful blouses and dresses. The taxi ride back was only 170 pesos so I gave the driver 200 pesos which made him smile.

My afternoon was rather boring but I did research orphanages to take the baby clothes to. Dinner was from the burger shop next door. I chickened out and had fries and a coke while Mr had two burgers.

This morning I had the concierge speak to the orphanage for me. It was an interesting mix of English and Filipino that he spoke. I can visit between 0830 - 1130 or 1430 - 1630. Just need to confirm someone can pose for photos with me when I am there. It is a condition of the company whose clothes I am donating. But first, I'm meeting my Aussie mate in half an hour and we're off to visit the Imelda Marcos shoe museum.

I'm going to break today into two posts. First up was my adventure to the Imelda Marcos shoe museum.

    DSCN0251 (800x600).jpg

We each paid 50 pesos (AUD$1.25) to enter the museum and saw 800 of Imelda's collection of over 3000 shoes.
    Slippers!

Then we went to the Philippine military cemetery and visited the tomb of the unknown soldier. After paying our respects we went for lunch.

This afternoon I visited the orphanage. I will type that up in the morning.
