Just wanted to remind folks of this great card from Pentagon Federal Credit Union...

    https://www.penfed.org/productsAndRates/creditCards/RewardCards.asp

Their Platinum Rewards Cashback Visa card is one of the few (only?) that offers 5% CB on gasoline purchases (not a "rotating" category!). Best of all, no minimum redemption or any other nonsense. Every month, whatever CB you earned is automatically credited back to your account prior to close of statement.

No annual fee, no headaches, great customer service. You will need a strong credit score and need to join the Credit Union (it is open to non-military for a small one-time fee).

I swear by this card for my gas purchases. Nothing else comes close, IMO.

  2. I have this card. Easy as pie, and love the 5% on gas auto credited.

Wow. Didn't know about this card and the 5%. That's nice without the rotation like you have with Discover.

I have both the Penfed Rewards Visa and AMEX. I like the 5% rebate on gas with the Visa and 5 pts per $ on airfare with the AMEX. Also no forex fees with the AMEX. I bought enough airline tickets on my AMEX to get a ticket LAX-PIT and LAX-ZRH for free. (the free tickets earns mileage since they are revenue tickets)

I have a PenFed branch in my building at work. They always look at me strangely when I pay my bill with rolls of $1 coins.[IMG]

"They always look at me strangely when I pay my bill with rolls of $1 coins."
It was really enjoyable at the end of last year with the PenFed AmEx 2 points/$1 promotion.

Has PenFed softened up their requirements on joining the credit union? I wanted to join a few years ago but it was strictly military or family of military.

You need to join the NMFA , and that costs $20. Its one of the options during the join up process...

Which is somewhat of a bummer as groceries used to earn 2%. :(

Also the gas needs to be pay at pump, you don't get 5% for something purchased inside.

Card now has a 2% FOREX fee, didn't pay attention when that changed!

That is great. I have heard nothing but great things about PenFed and very generous limits and was bummed a couple years ago when I couldn't join. I need to give them another look.

Is it a hard pull to join PenFed or do they only pull your credit when you apply for one of their products?

They pull EQ. (good for 60-90 days???)
The joining requirements are usually pretty weird, Here are the requirments.

I'm a student, so I was able to join the Society of American Military Engineers for free (#3 on their website) I was then able to go and apply at PenFed. Called to activate my account and applied for the credit card on the same call, quick easy and painless, took less than 5 minutes.

They do a hard pull when you join so you should apply for credit within 60-90 days. I opened a LOC on checking & applied for the Visa over the phone on the first day. One hard pull. I joined 3 years ago.
