As a result of a partnership between ezRez Software and PayPal, to be rolled out in 2012, PayPal account holders will be able to use miles and other hospitality rewards as digital currency to pay for goods and services anywhere that PayPal is accepted. EzRez already works with some of the world's largest loyalty rewards programmes, processing more than 20 billion reward points annually through its platform. MileagePlus, United Airlines' FFP, will be the first rewards programme to allow PayPal account holders to use miles as a currency. Participating rewards programmes can allow PayPal account holders to use rewards points to pay for all or part of their transaction anywhere PayPal is accepted.

And yet some folks will jump on this. It's kind of like programs that hold "auctions" with points. People will bid thousands of dollars worth of points for a $200 gift card.

I never understood how these do so well, but I guess there are just some people out there with so many points that they don't really care what they do with them...must be a nice problem to have!

not that I would ever do it, but apparently some folks really go for convenience. As the saying goes, a fool and his money are soon parted...

There are some folks that accumulate miles at such insane rates that it would make sense for them to use miles/points to pay for things rather than pay out of pocket.

I can't imagine ever earning miles so fast that I would just burn them for goods out of a catalog at 1 cent/mile.

Then you obviously don't track in SkyPesos, I mean 1 cent per mile is better than a lot of their redemptions ;)

Right, while I have about 200,000 Skypesos under management, I don't actively pursue more. Instead of settling for 1 cent per mile, though, I am thinking of Coupon Connection to maybe get a bit more (and get them off my "balance sheet"). But yes, there's no way I'd even consider signing up for a Skymiles credit card even if I could charge huge amounts of expenses to the card.

Others obviously see this differently :)

ok so would there be a way to receive the actual points/miles as payment or are they going to be converted to cash first?

I just unloaded a few, but still have 970,000 SkyPesos. They are hard to use. I'd take 1 cent a mile in a flash just to get rid of them and DL. There is theoretical value but lately it has been impossible to use them myself.

The question is, how did the fool get his money in the first place? :D

Might be a decent way to get rid of orphan point/miles.

And how will they get around the prohibition against selling points/miles that most programs have in the T & C?

And JB if you want to give me Skypesos, I'll take them ;)

I wish I had that problem! If I could get US/HA at <1cpm on a regular basis, that'd be amazing!

Well, the US Airways Grand Slam seem to be around every fall. I'd call that very regular, and with the GS you can easily net US miles for less than 0.5 cent per mile.
