Aeroplan has the "feature" allowing you to pay taxes and fees on an award redemption with additional miles up and running.

It now appears as a tick box option of either cash or miles with cash being the default.

Each aeroplan mile is worth 0.85 cents towards the taxes and fees. Ouch - i think i'll continue to use cash..

Aeroplan/Aimia did not become a cash cow by giving things away. It will be interesting to see how Aimia will continue to be profitable once AC takes back the FF program in 2019.

    0.85 cents/mile. Hmm...

I think that I shall stick with the tried-and-true of transcontinental cross-border J, and northwestern outstation Y, redemptions. Both of these at short notice, can usually manage to get better than 5 cents/mile in apparent value, net of 'taxes, paid in cash (of course).

Hopefully no one takes advantage of this option, so that it would either push them to improve it.
