    Good afternoon,

I saw this in London's Telegraph today: Passenger Shortage Threatens Higher Flight Taxes

This is not motivating for travel within ex-UK and I'm sure it could negatively affect many travelers.

Many of you may have seen mtkeller's very helpful thread on avoiding the UK's APD.

    :)robin

Funny...when the government put a tax on something, fewer people did it. Who woulda thought?

And the UK gov't definitely likes to impose taxes...even one of my German colleagues said he pays about 51% tax...yikes!

Maybe lowering the APD would encourage more travelers, but that's just too much common sense...

They deliberately raise taxes on things like cigarettes to decrease consumption of those items, so how can they be surprised when it works the same way for other things, like air travel? You can't expect there to be an effect only when you want one.

The irony of this development is that one of the stated reasons for adding the APD is to reduce travel by making it more of a luxury good. Go figure.

Yes, but statistically fewer people smoke and they smoke less when taxes are higher. This is especially true for young people, so tobacco taxes are considered to be a "successful" public policy beyond the revenue they raise.

You didn't actually expect the originators of the Press Release to believe what it said did you?

Must be UK govt's green policy LOL

Less flyers, less planes therefore less emissions

Excellent- however less tax revenue was somehow not part of this budget forecast.
