Record numbers of beach combers and sun seekers are on the horizon at Chicago Rockford International Airport in 2013.

And growth anticipated for airport’s leisure travel business could result in a $37 million terminal expansion.

While nationwide passenger growth stagnates, Rockford predicts a 15 percent increase in 2013 from the 210,406 passengers who flew to or from Rockford in 2012. Traffic last year was up about 10 percent and airport officials believe double-digit percentage growth will be the norm into the foreseeable future.

If the airport hits projections of 242,000 passengers in 2013, it would easily surpass the passenger record it set in 2007, when 215,000 people moved through the gates at an airport officials say is already overcrowded.

...and the kicker: it's over 70 miles from Chicago!

Why doesn't COS just call itself Denver-South Airport? If this place can get away with it and get record growth their setting NA up for the issue in Europe where people buy a ticket on an LCC and when they get to their destination then realize they're nowhere near it.

Gold for Rockford, but the precedent being set, especially with Chicago in the name, is very bad for traveler transparency and customer experience.

For the brief period that NWA flew out of RFD it was great for me. It's about 5 or 10 minutes further from me than ORD, but with free parking right in front of the terminal, home-to-gate time was a bit less than with ORD.

Calling it Chicago Rockford is no worse than Gary/Chicago International Airport.
GYY claims to be 35 minutes from downtown Chicago, but since typical routing is via the Dirty Dan Ryan Expy, that 35 could easily double.

I have a problem with Gary as well, or airlines that call Ontario to be Los Angeles, despite it being owned by LAWA it's not really close to the majority of the incorporated city of Los Angeles.
