If you have flights booked with this partner, better call AA. ;)

JL, MX, AA, and now MA. IT, AB, and MH all have varying degrees of monetary issues. Hopefully this alliance and its members can move into a healthy financial zone.

    LINK.

"Hungarian flag-carrier Malev announced on Friday that it had stopped operating because its liquidity situation has become unsustainable and all its flights had been grounded as of 0500 GMT on Friday."

Well, OW seems to be the alliance for bankruptcy, ST is for airlines recovering from safety issues, and Star accepts almost anyone (only almost because of Air India). Kind of makes you understand why Branson has been fighting joining an alliance

What safety issues at ST? ST's current and future airlines like KE, GA etc. all have long-established and sterling reputations for safety!

Was nice to have options besides BA/IB for getting across Europe, etc. Glad Air Berlin is still on tap to join OW in March.....

In the meantime Latam will be in soon, probably, and all Latam parts are very profitable. Maybe not enough to cope with all the other issues but...

As for ST their complete dedication to superior quality in operations, profitability and customer services is exemplified perfectly by the upcoming addition of Aerolineas Argentinas to their ranks.

Call AA and ask the agent to "protect" you by giving you an alternate routing. Any routing should be valid (i.e. the fare class of your booking shouldn't matter, so long as there is an open business class seat).

Helps to pay attention to people's signatures... Of course you knew what to do. You're just expressing disappointment that you can't fly Malev. Based on your post over in the Oneworld Forum, a valid routing won't be nearly as simple as the one you had. In fact, you'll likely have to fly through Finland, LHR, Spain, or Russia. That's really inconvenient for eastern Europe.

I'm in the phone with them right now and they don't know about it. The agent put me on hold to check the information!

So nobody has a moment of questioning their sanity, yes, I edited my response to add text, and EFN responded to me while I was adding text... My brain is moving slow, even for a Friday afternoon!

Good luck with a new route. Oneworld doesn't have great options for the route you mentioned in the other thread. Maybe AA has another codeshare partner or will be willing to put you on a non-partner because of the strange circumstances.

I wonder if this means AA's JFK-BUD might not make it's return as scheduled in June. Is the O&D strong enough to have this make sense?

With AB coming on board maybe JFK-BER makes more sense. Guess we will see.

On a personal level, I'm interested in this whole development because I'm going to Budapest in April--thankfully on DL-KLM, and not Malev. The analysis will be interesting though. With Malev gone from the market, Budapest will be left with fewer intra-Europe connections, which will mean less options for Norh America-EU hub-BUD, and might in turn make a route like JFK-BUD more likely, rather than less so. Like with AA, I wonder if DL will reconsider it's JFK-BUD route and/or a possible ATL-BUD route.

The agent told me to call in a week from now, because it seems that AA is in contact with other airlines to allow us to move from Malev to other outside OW. So, I guess I have to wait a week to find out what it will happen to my itinerary!

The JFK-BUD route had high loads, as I understand from call agents when I tried to find award availability.

Gotta say that losing Malev is a huge hit for Budapest. The times I've flown them they had very new feeling planes and good service.

I was originally holding a ticket on them for departure this morning. When I called back in to book it, the agent had somehow released my seat and it was no longer available. Ended up on LH instead. Pretty thankful at this point though I was quite upset at the time!

But....so did ORD-DEL and according to our local BUR resident, DFW-BUR. :D

The new mantra for AA flyers when looking at any future route cuts should be "High loads do not equal profit." It also doesn't tell us how much of that is O&D and how much was connecting to MA routes.

I'm hoping JFK-BUD sticks around! I would take ORD/JFK-BER over it though for my own personal reasons.

Looks like they didn't waste any time removing the Malev livery from the oneworld.com website!

Huge hit for all Hungary but the country is now in a deep crisis, that lloks worst than the one of other European nations.
The issue is that MA was flying many routes without cometetiors, meaning that several city pairs are no longer serves. Most reasonable option is to fly via an hub.

It's there now. Possibly taken off, then put right back on again.
