    Travelers to and from the Milwaukee area may have noticed there have been noticeable changes at General Mitchell International Airport recently.

    Business Journal of Milwaukee reporter Rich Rovito says a lot has changed for the airport since 2010. Back then, in the wake of the demise of Midwest Airline, Milwaukee became a highly competitive market. AirTran attempted to take over Midwest but lost out to Republic Airways, which had also bought Frontier Airlines.

    Rovito says when those two companies merged, promises were made to consumer that Frontier would be a strong, competitive airline dedicated to the market. But the end of Mitchell's hey day came quickly.

    At the time, the airport was likely the most competitive airport in the country, with dirt cheap fares, tons of service, and record highs for number of passengers.
