SOP for UA in egregious IRROPS cases is to refund the ticket price and offer some voucher value (and/or miles) over and above that.

I hope United will learn from this and set up a Four Seasons resort in Goose Bay for future stranded passengers.

The big problem is being taken back to Newark where they had to clear immigration so they could leave the US again.

Understood - I'd rather remain in Canada than return to Newark! :p

I'd rather be sitting in a cold room than bobbing on top of an floating ice cube in the Atlantic, just saying. :D

Let's look past the accommodations, UA had a serious communication problem and the pax had no idea what was going on. That seems pretty bad to me.

Good point. They should have had a representative in Goose Bay in anticipation of the diversion.

Or the good news is, TSA gets a second chance at the things they missed the first time. :D

    Funny response.
No but couldn't the crew get information from the company and pass it on to the pax? It seems from reading all the articles (good one on Bloomberg) lack of communication on the 20+ hours wait was the worst part of the experience.

I'm sure if you were in the same position as they folks-- you'd want information not to be kept in the dark.

    Fair enough.

Of course people reasonably want timely information. What we don't know is why they didn't get it. Bear in mind that this was the middle of the night, which would naturally hamper ability to come up with a plan B.

Shouldn't every major airline always have some responsible executive on call to be the main responsible person to make decisions when a *major* diversion or other operations melt down happens? Supposedly they do have such plans for crashes.
