Please tell me a little about online check in. I am a first time flyer. How would it matter if I check in online, and what if I check in when I go to the airport?

Sometimes, checking in online means you get better seats (if your seats weren't reserved prior to checking in). Also, sometimes flights are overbooked and the passengers most likely to be bumped from the flight are the ones who checked in last.

Also, lineups can be long at airports so the less need you have to be in line, the better.

If you are flying without checked baggage, you may only need to proceed to security clearance if you have checked in online.

If you just have carry on luggage, on line check in can save you a lot of time at the airport because you can just take the boarding pass you've already printed and go straight to the gate -- or in some cases, use your smart phone.

    I can't even remember the last time I didn't do it !
