in some regards this seems to be the real deal

was just granted the status January 15 through Qatar Airways

last night when I checked in for Economy class seat on Cathay, they noted I was Emerald, was pleasantly surprised Cathay gave me a pass to their 1st Class Wing lounge, darned nice place

on the other side of the equation, I just contacted AA about an existing booking and they had no knowledge of Emerald status, the lady who tried to help me was totally clueless in general

Congratulations on getting Emerald status. It is indeed a pretty big deal with most One World carriers, as you saw from the lounge access. You'll also find it really helps in case of irregular operations.

I never liked Cathay all that much when I lived in HK but they are far more like-able with Emerald status from oneworld.

Just got upgraded in their quite decent lounge at the Manila airport

Surprised that they followed the published policies?

Beyond that, seems unlikely that much of what you'd be calling AA about would matter vis a vis the status. How did it come up there?

rather amusing that the head FA on both flights welcomed me by name, while sitting in Economy no less, when I have not flown on Cathay in years

They put that information (name and elite status) on the manifest, I think. This is not unusual, United and KLM do, too. And I suppose they encourage friendly recognition of the top elites (Emeralds). And finally, CX has always been friendly to me, even when I was just Ruby.
