how do you like to find available awards on CX?
seems like BA and AA miles are so much harder to use due to lack or free search engines?
AA website useless for non AA
    only quantas is remotely helpful

*A seems so much easier with ANA, CO, Aeroplan tools

The British Airways website is clunky but will show you the Cathay Pacific awards available to partners most accurately most of the time.

If it shows up there you can book it with BA miles or with AA miles.

I used recently qantas to look for one world award. I was able to get CX from DEL-HKG-LAX for friend in J on CX using BA miles. Though one flight qantas showed but agent couldn't see but she found another CX flight from DEL-HKG which was not shown on qantas.
Also similar experience , ANA showed no TG from NRT-DEL or basically no economy from NRT-DEL(if I remember correctly) but agent saw TG flights for almost anyday (united miles) we wanted.

I was under the impression that they are very accurate but I guess there is always room for agent magic.

Last year I pretty easily snagged a one-way LAX-BKK in CX F with 75K BA.
The last 4 months I never see CX come up, despite some serious effort.
Looking ex- LAX/SFO/YVR of course, headed to PEK but also check HKG.
    I suppose i should call in ?? ;)

    edit:
well, I just tried now and SFO-HKG in F popped right up on CX F.
    How embarassing.

Nah, it's like bringing an umbrella with you to make sure that it doesn't rain. You made it appear!

Seriously, thanks for the info- I'll look a little harder now.

I've never had a problem going via awardnexus, although they're really limiting searches now.

I use AwardNexus too and haven't had any issues. How are they limited searches now though? I haven't used it in weeks.

i guess calling AA really helps
    takes some time though!
their award agents a pretty helpful
current problem is really due to changing an itinerary I haave had reserved for 6 months or so. i took the advice out there and planned 1 year in advance...love my itinerary to DPS. but it seems work schedules changed a bit so now trying to make changes is just as hard as if making a whole new res only 6 months in advance.
confounding everything is the res is *A though CO miles on AC/TG and TG/LH/UA on return
AND continental doesnt do one way awards until june 15.
found an awesome new departure YYZ-HKG-DPS in F on CX, but a terrible return (too late)- i reseved the CX outbound. (5 days courtesy by AA)
so goal i think is to keep that CX outbound and rebook a new *A return, i just have to keep calling and renewing that courtesy every 5 days until i can change my CO award to a one way after june 15. does this make sense or am i F'd?

Searching is a clunky process, no doubt. For my trip next week, I used a combo of:

    JAL.com - for CX/JL
AA.com - for the AA legs
Kay Veee Ess tool (I spell it that way to avoid the Bot :) ). -

I never had much luck with Awardnexus for some reason - wouldn't return my searches.

JAL was pretty good with showing availability - Kay vee ess actually was pretty good to search across the multiple airlines although one does have to enter their ff#s and passwords to poll the website data - something one could do on their own but it did save some time (but cost some money. :) )

The reloading is very limited from what I saw a few weeks ago.

"For free community account, you can request a 100 points refill every 90 days and when your balance is below 10 points."

BA, hands down. It is clunky and sometimes gives me trouble, but 9 out of 10 times it is accurate. You may need to scroll dates back and forth a few times, it may not show up, chose "search 7 days earlier" and then "7 days later" and your original date may actually show up, something I noticed with their search engine.

Also, doesn't KVS tool allow you to search as well, I never tried it, but that is what I heard.

    Cheers,

It does. You can search Amadeus OW (doesn't seem to include JL) , Amadeus OW/BA (includes all partners) and Amadeus OW/CX (searches Cathay).

You need accounts for BA/QF/CX to use the tool but it does make checking a bit easier.

I just tried AwardNexus and it did come back with availability this time. That is a viable option too, like others said. :)

If you sign up for a free Asia Miles account, you can also search CX directly. I believe that this is the engine behind the Amadeus: Awards/CX method in KVS.

That's correct. But bear in mind airlines like BA and AA may not 'see' all the space that this method suggests is available.

I've tried searching for the last week on BA's site for CX and JL awards. Returns an error 9 out of 10 times. I usually have luck with the BA site. The BA agent says they are having issues with CX flights. I'll have to sign up for Qantas and JL sites to continue my searches for NRT/SGN/HKG flights. Thanks for the tips.

That has been my experience for some time,
but just this morning, expecting the same old error-out,
CX in F YVR-MNL came right up on the days I first searched.

Of course, taxes are now $400+, whereas last year about $150 IIRC. :(

Is that due to the to the HKG-MNL portion? I recently got a RT award from YYZ-HKG in Biz and AA only wanted 20 USD for taxes.

    I really don't know !
Was that in Economy or Premium ??

I haven't been able to keep up with who charges what these days.
I booked some BA awards on AA to South America this winter,
    AUS-SCL; SCL-IPC-SCL; EZE-AUS...the taxes are very low.

Awards using AA AUS-PEK-PEK are also very cheap tax-wise.
But use BA miles and taxes are much higher (this year).
I suppose I should go back and try it YVR-HKG and find out.

    edit:
tried that and just get the familiar old error messages...

AA does not charge fuel surchages on CX redemptions. BA does.

Gary, was this always the case? I recall booking CX awards a few years back and not encountering such steep fuel surcharges.

It's unfortunate since I have banked quite a few BA miles. I used my AA miles on a recent redemption to Asia, but I had to use more miles since AA didn't allow for international stopovers. I've started accruing more AA miles vs. BA miles now since my redemptions are often to Asia on CX.

No, it wasn't, this is really quite new over the last year.

BA does allow stopovers, although you never want to include more than 1 partner on an award (KA and CX count as just 1) or the mileage costs really shoot up. BA is cheaper for business class than AA, most expensive for first class, and of course there are fuel surcharges.

Right, I was saying that BA allowed for the stopover to PVG without using additional miles, but charged me more in taxes/fees. AA charged me more miles for the additional PVG-HKG leg, but charged less taxes/fees, so I went with AA.

I have an October AUS-PEK-AUS on AA booked in F
with 150K BA miles, plus $548 taxes,
which is a sad tax story compared to last year. :(

Not having enough AA miles at this time,
I went ahead and booked it a few weeks ago,
just to have the option locked in.

With BA I can redeposit the whole thing for $50.
I should have the AA miles in 2-3 months,
and will hopefully, once the trip gels,
    re-ticket via AA for 135K miles and $39. :)
