Hi, wondering if more miles are needed when you book one-way (as oppose to a RT) award ticket? DL's award chart says "based on RT travel" - hence the question. Thank you.

    Delta is wacky.

The cost for a one way trip will be the same as if you made the round trip, except that the taxes for the non-existent return part of the trip should be left out.

However, if you find yourself booking the one-way at a high or mid level, you can actually get the price down by finding and booking the return leg at the low level (any date, since you don't intend to fly it). In this case, the ticket will price at the average of the outbound and return levels.

I think that's correct, but would advise you to get it confirmed by someone who truly understands Delta's award pricing (that is, someone here, not someone at Delta).

Delta does not really have one-way awards. As Larry laid out, they always charge for a round-trip. If you only book 1 leg they charge you for the return at the same mile cost as well.

Depending on where youre flying to/from, sometimes its cheaper to openjaw to a third region.
