How can I save on a one way flight?

Want to book SYD to LAX or SYD to DFW and the costs are similar to a return fare.

    If you don't have luggage.
Try a hidden city like SYD-Houston or other city.
Don't know what airline you're on so I can't get more specific.

Thanks - what do you mean by 'hidden city'?

Looking at all major airlines Qantas, Virgin etc.

That is unlikely to help much in this case. Barring errors fares from Australia to LAX or DFW are the same or less than to other cities in mainland USA.

That is often the case with longhaul. Sometimes a return fare is cheaper, especially if booked with less obvious airline.

    Airlines that fly SYD-LAX

    nonstop - QF, UA, DL
onestop - VA (via BNE), NZ (via AKL), HA (via HNL), FJ (via NAN), AC (via YVR)
onestop through Asia - KE (via ICN), CZ (via CAN), JL (via NRT), CX (via HKG), OZ (via ICN)

Find a cheap return (if you can) and don't fly the return portion.

HNL may be cheaper than LAX/SFO, but presumably you would then need to get from Hawaii to mainland USA, which would negate the fare saving. Other places in mainland USA that are not directly served from Australia are unlikely to be cheaper (at best same far).
