The DoT, UA and AA agreed to move forward with the O'Hare expansion plans (8 runways when done). When asked why he was willing to drop the lawsuit over the issue UA CEO Smisek noted that Secretary of Transportation LaHood "helped change my mind."

The airlines will guarantee nearly $300MM in municipal bonds according to published reports.

Hopefully this doesn't take much international traffic away from my home airport EWR.

Doubtful... If ORD is going to take away any international capacity, it will definitely be from IAD.

And finally (eventually) with multiple E-W parallel runways, I think the main advantage will be much reduced (HOPEfully) delays due to bad weather. Forget capacity, keep those take-off's and landing's humming even if there is 1" of snow!

It is not really an EWR issue, it is an airspace issue... The airport can easily accommodate the daily demand, but the airspace cannot handle the traffic, because all the major NYC airports are in each other's flight paths.

If they close TEB or LGA, I bet it will alleviate a lot of issues, even if all traffic moves to JFK or EWR, because that means the NY ARTCC won't have to worry about intersecting traffic from TEB/LGA.

Or better yet, just mandate that no RJ's can take off or land at any of the NY area airports. [IMG]
